Abstract: With the purpose of saving energy and improving the facility of snow removal, a snow treatment system of urban scale has been proposed. The system consists of such units as for gathering snow, transporting snow, storing snow, transporting cold energy and cooling buildings. After the possible methods for realizing the units are briefly discussed, a trial plan of system has been composed of Nagaoka City. In this plan, 400 thousand ton of snow will be gathered around the main road of 10 km length in the city in winter, and transported through 750mm-dia. pipes in the form of the snow-water mixture to a snow storage dam of 1100 thousand cubic meter located in the valley 7.5 km apart from the center of the city. In summer, cool water at about 0\C\ will be supplied from storage dam to cooling units of buildings in the city. All the pipes will be heat-insulated and double-lined through which water is circulating in one direction both in winter and in summer. It has been concluded that 1250 thousand square meter of floor area of buildings can be air-conditioned by the planned system and the electric power rate required for the air conditioning can be reduced to 5 percent in summer while electric energy consumption to 10 percent through year. And also the facility of snow removal from urban will be fairly improved by the system.
