Abstract: Although several experimental procedures of JIC testing have been proposed, they have some difficulties, in convenience or in reliance. In the present paper, a convenient and practically useful method for measuring JIC, using a correlation between load-point deflection (U) and stretched zone width (SZW), has been proposed. Experimental data give a linear relationship between U and SZW of the form U=0.3+10.5 SZW (U, SZW in mm).For three-point bend specimens, where span is 60 mm and a/W=0.5. No significant effects of yield stress and work-hardening rate on the relationship are found. The value of JIC measured by using the method proposed in the present paper agree with that measured by using the stretched-zone method, which has been proposed by Kobayashi et al. The method proposed in the present paper requires only one specimen and no laborious work. It is further convenient than the R-curve method and the stretched-zone method and more reliable than the electric potential method and the AE method.
