Abstract: A theoretical study of the hydrodynamic instability of nematic liquid crystals subjected to an oscillation shear flow is presented. A two-dimensional rectangular shear to a homeotropically aligned nematic film between two parallel plates. On the basis of Ericksen-Leslie continuum theory of liquid crystals, the nematic shear instability is theoretically investigated within a linear approximation. Phase diagrams for roll instabilities are numerically obtained. It is found that, consistent with the experimental observations, no instability occurs for a one-dimensional shear flow, and that the present result predicts an interesting parametric instability with a reentrant phenomenon for the two-dimensional rectangular shear.
