Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate economically optimum size of strage tank and rainwater collector for various scale of rainwater usage system. Both amounts of rainwater utilized and public water saved for a give size of tank and collector are simulated with daily precipitation data at 6 representative cities of Nagaoka, Niigata, Tokyo, Kumagaya, Nagoya and Kobe. Results of calculation are shown as normalized values of water tank size and water collector size by average annual amount of water consumed. The balance of the benefit due to water saving and the cost depend on the scale of the system. yields minimum payback period of the system. It appears that the payback period of properly designed rainwater usage system could be around 20 years for all the cities. An experimental rainwater usage system for an office building was also evaluated.
