Abstract: The slug dye release study was quite commonly carried out in 1960s to 1970s in Japan in order to investigate the oceanic diffusion property. The most common practice then was to take an areal photograph of diffusing dye cloud and calculate the rate of the increase of the dye cloud area to obtain the horizontal diffusivity. This practice is thought to be too simple and leaves the doubt as to reliability of the obtained diffusivity. In this paper several methods of analysis has been reviewed and, among them, the method originally proposed by Adachi et al. is scrutinized and the method originally proposed by Gifford for the atmospheric diffusion is extended to apply for the oceanic diffusion and the latter is shown to give a good result with the variance of dye concentration distribution estimated in the process.
